Most voice AI talk assumes local service businesses. Ecommerce is different — the pain isn't the phone, it's the support queue: returns, WISMO ("where is my order"), exchanges, and refund-status tickets that flood email, chat, and yes, the phone line for higher-ticket brands. If you can pitch voice AND chat containment on the calls and tickets that don't need a human, ecommerce returns is a fat, underbuilt niche. Here's the playbook.
Why it pays
- Brutal ticket volume. Returns and WISMO are the two highest-volume, lowest-value support tickets in ecommerce. Brands drown in them, especially post-holiday.
- They measure everything. Ecommerce operators live in dashboards — cost-per-contact, deflection rate, CSAT. You can prove ROI with numbers they already track, which makes the sale clean.
- Support is a cost center they want to shrink. Every ticket a human touches costs $4–$8 loaded. Deflecting the repetitive ones is money they feel immediately.
- Higher-ticket brands still take calls. Furniture, electronics, jewelry, supplements — anything with a real phone line has WISMO and return calls you can contain.
The calls (and tickets) that hurt
- WISMO — "where is my order?" — the single most common, most deflectable contact in ecommerce.
- Return initiation — "I want to send this back" — a rules-based flow (window open? eligible? generate label) that rarely needs a human.
- Refund status — "where's my refund?" — pure lookup, high emotional charge, zero judgment required.
- Exchanges and sizing — "wrong size, can I swap it?" — templated, high-volume, especially in apparel.
The wedge use-case
Lead with WISMO + return initiation containment. The agent pulls order status (Shopify, order-tracking API), answers WISMO with a real ETA, and walks a return through the eligibility rules — window, condition, category exclusions — then generates the label or files the RMA. Every contained contact is a ticket a human never touched. This is a containment/deflection play, so you sell against cost-per-contact, not "missed calls." For brands with a phone line, the same logic runs on voice via Vapi or Retell; for chat/email, the same knowledge base powers the deflection.
The economics
Price on deflection: if a brand does 5,000 WISMO/return contacts a month at $5 loaded each and you contain 60%, that's $15k/month of labor they stop paying. Charging $1,500–$4,000/month for that is an easy yes. Your build is heavily reusable — the return/WISMO logic is nearly identical across Shopify brands; only the return policy and catalog change. ~80% margins once the first Shopify integration is built.
What to charge
$1,500–$3,500/month tiered by contact volume, plus a $2,000–$4,000 setup fee for the platform integration. Anchor every number on cost-per-contact deflected and CSAT held steady. Offer a deflection-rate guarantee once you've got data — it closes skeptics.
Landing the first three
- Target 3PL-shipping Shopify brands doing real volume. Under ~2,000 orders/month there isn't enough pain; way above, they may already have Gorgias or a big team. Aim for the squeezed middle.
- Lead with cost-per-contact. "What does a support ticket cost you fully loaded, and what percentage are just WISMO and returns?" is the whole pitch.
- Post-Q4 is your season. January is return-tsunami month — brands are bleeding and desperate. Time your outreach for it.
The honest caveat
This niche competes with entrenched ecommerce helpdesks — Gorgias, Zendesk, Kustomer — that already do macros and some automation. Don't fight them head-on; position as the voice + deep-automation layer that actually resolves the return, not just tags the ticket. And returns logic gets thorny fast — final-sale items, damaged goods, fraud patterns, edge-case policies. Scope tightly: contain the clean 60–70% and escalate the messy tail to a human with full context. The brands that measure everything will love you precisely because you didn't overpromise 100% — you promised a number and hit it.
